Things to Avoid When Renting a Dumpster

Sep 14, 2022

5 things you should keep in mind before renting a dumpster for waste disposal:

Renting a dumpster is a convenient way of handling waste disposal from remodeling and spring cleaning jobs as well as construction and demolition projects. It is important to do your research before renting a dumpster so you don’t get duped by a dumpster rental company.

Hidden Fees

Make sure you are aware of any hidden fees. Many dumpster rental companies are not upfront about hidden fees or surcharges. Always ask if the quote you are given includes any extra charges like fuel surcharges. At Advance Disposal, our quote includes:

  • Delivery charge
  • Pick-up charge
  • Disposal fee

Additional charges are added to the overall rental price if:

  • The dumpster is overweight
  • Hazardous (prohibited) items are put in the container
  • The time period of rental is extended

Rent from a Local Dumpster Company

It is more expensive to rent a dumpster from company than from a local dumpster company. This is because the company acts as a middleman for local companies. They don’t actually own the dumpsters. Instead, they charge you extra for a rental that would be way cheaper if you dealt directly with a local company.

    Dumpster Size

Unfortunately, some dumpster rental companies supply dumpsters that are sometimes smaller than what they claim them to be. Always ask for the exact volume you are getting before renting a dumpster. If you’re not sure you are getting the dumpster size you are paying for, insist on getting the inside and outside dimensions of the dumpster.

    Internet Scams

Don’t just pick a dumpster company because online they have favorable reviews. Some companies actually hire marketers to place fictitious reviews to boost their company’s profile or pay internet influencers to recommend the company on their blogs or other internet platforms. Do your homework. Ask around locally to find a company that is known for delivering fast and responsive service and will not scam you by spring hidden charges on you at the last minute.

    Junk Haulers

Junk haulers do not actually have dumpsters. They usually handle waste disposal by moving your junk in their trucks. This sometimes means multiple trips to and from your home if you have waste from a big clean-out project. Though junk haulers can be helpful, they are a much more expensive option than renting a dumpster.
